Special Teams Propel Saints to 6-4 Win Over Wolverines

By Terry Martin

The Saints are coming off an incredible home stand by winning all 7 games, defeating the top ranked Brooks Bandits, all while keeping their Grant Fuhr Arena win streak alive. The Saints now look to the Whitecourt Wolverines, where they look to push their current win streak to 13 games. The Wolverines are currently on a 3-game win steak and they sit 4th in the North with 12 wins and 28 points.

The Wolverines would break the tie first with 11:24 left in the period after a Cooper Smyl backhand shot would find the back of the net. Jaden Senkoe would then tie the game for the Saints as he fired the puck from the blueline. Caiden Gault would then snipe the puck glove side for his 19th goal of the season to give the Saints a 2-1 lead. The final shots after 20 minutes would favour the Saints 20-11.

Jayden Davis would score first for the Saints just a few seconds into the second period as he would stuff home a rebound on a power play opportunity. Chase Broda would then cut the Saints lead to 1 after finding himself unguarded in the slot. Dylan Leslie then scores to tie the game just a few seconds later 3-3. Jayden Davis would then walk through the slot and fire the puck low glove to give the Saints the lead back. Cody Pisarczyk would then score on the power play opportunity just following the Davis goal to give the Saints their 2-goal lead back. The Saints would again lead on the shot clock 38-17 after 2 periods of play.

Jaxon Dube would bring the Wolverines within 1 goal just 1 minute into the third period. Cody Pisarczyk would then get that 2-goal lead back for the Saints with just 13 minutes to go in the game. The Saints would go on to win their 13th straight game in Whitecourt as they take down the Wolverines. Final shots in the game were 44-21 for the Saints.

The Saints will be back at home for one game against the Drayton Valley Thunder on Saturday night and then they will be on a 3-game road trip before coming back to the GFA at the end of the month.
