Saints Solidify Goaltending Tandem For Upcoming Season

Spruce Grove Saints General Manager Rob Sklaruk announced today the club has signed goaltenders Maxwell Beckford and Zac Onyskiw for the upcoming season.

Beckford, a native of London, Ontario, sits at 6’2″, 200lbs. He joins the Saints for the upcoming campaign after spending the last three seasons with the Elgin Middlesex Chiefs organization in London. The 18-year-old most recently played at the U18AAA level in 2019-2020, appearing in 23 games while recording a 2.33 goals against average with two shutouts.

Also signed for the upcoming season is 17-year-old goaltender Zac Onyskiw. A product of Edmonton, Alberta, Onyskiw is listed at 5’11″, 201 lbs. He enters the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) after spending last season with the South Side Athletic Club in the Alberta Elite Hockey League’s U18AAA division. Zac played two games before his season was cut short by the pandemic.

General Manager Rob Sklaruk spoke about his new goaltending tandem saying, “Both goaltenders came into our camp with something to prove, they both moved very well, battled hard and made big saves at key times. Beckford’s size and ability to cut down angles on potential shooters allows him to make difficult saves look easy. Onyskiw’s high compete and battle level was on display throughout camp, his lateral movement, calmness in the net and in tight awareness was impressive to watch.”

The Spruce Grove Saints open the 2021-2022 season at home this Friday, Sept 17th against the Sherwood Park Crusaders. With tons of excitement planned, including free food and drinks, Saints merchandise giveaways and a Ryan Nugent-Hopkins jersey up for grabs, it’s going to be a great night of junior hockey!
