Saints Name Brandon Switzer Assistant Coach

(Spruce Grove, AB) – The Spruce Grove Saints are proud to announce Brandon Switzer has been named as an Assistant Coach for the upcoming 2022-2023 season.

Switzer spent last season with the Creston Valley Thunder Cats in the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League (KIJHL) as the Assistant General Manager and Associate Coach. He was promoted and set to be the Head Coach and General Manager of the Thunder Cats for this upcoming season before taking the role with the Saints.

Switzer helped coach the Thunder Cats to a 19-22-1 record last season, finishing third in the Neil Murdoch Division and 12th overall. Creston Valley then fell in round one of the playoffs, falling in seven games to the Beaver Valley Nighthawks.

Prior to his time in Creston Valley, the Brandon, Manitoba native spent two seasons as Co-Head Coach for the Brandon Wheat Kings U17 AAA Prep program.

Switzer had an impressive junior hockey playing career before joining heading behind the bench, splitting his time between the Whitecourt Wolverines in the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) and with the Flin Flon Bombers in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL).

Overall, Switzer played a combined 193 games throughout his junior career, tallying 78 goals and 101 points, along with 311 penalty minutes. In Switzer’s final year of junior, he was named playoff MVP after leading the Bombers to the SJHL finals in 2015-16.

After his junior career finished, Switzer took his talents to NCAA Division I, playing one season for the University of Alaska-Anchorage Seawolves.

Saints General Manager Rob Sklaruk spoke about the newest member of the organization saying, “Brandon comes to us as a motivated, detail orientated professional. We feel he can successfully transition into a Head Coach one day. I’m looking forward to seeing him behind our bench this season.”

While playing, Switzer’s leadership ability was evident with a plethora of personal awards and accomplishments. Beyond being named SJHL Playoff MVP, he also received a Fan Favorite Award, a Humanitarian Award, an SJHL Leadership Scholarship, and was an alternate captain throughout his career.

Saints Head Coach Bram Stephen spoke about his new assistant coach and says, “We are very pleased to have Brandon join our coaching staff this year. He has excellent leadership and communication skills, along with his knowledge of the game, which have allowed him to become a Head Coach/GM at the junior level in such a short time. These skills will greatly benefit our players and we are excited that he is joining the Saints organization.”

The Saints would like to welcome Brandon and the entire Switzer family to the organization!
