Saints Make Pair of Roster Moves at Deadline

(Spruce Grove, AB) ? Spruce Grove Saints General Manager Rob Sklaruk announced two roster moves upon the conclusion of the 4 pm trade Hockey Canada trade deadline.

In the first transaction, 2000 born forward Brecon Wood will be joining the Saints from the Swift Current Broncos of the Western Hockey League for the remainder of the season. Saints fans will recognize the name as Wood played 4 games with the Saints last season posting 2 assists and 2 penalty minutes before signing with the Seattle Thunderbirds for the remainder of the 2018-19 season.

The Edmonton, AB native is a veteran of 173 WHL games, compiling 13 goals, 12 assists and 63 penalty minutes split between the Thunderbirds, Broncos and Moose Jaw Warriors.

Brecon?s brother Evan also suited up for the Saints last season.

GM Rob Sklaruk was excited to hear the news of Brecon rejoining the team.

?Adding a veteran player like Brecon is a huge boost to our team. He (Wood) is another big body who skates well and can play up and down our line up.? Sklaruk continued. ?With Brecon already being familiar to our team it was a no brainer to have him part of the group and we expect him to be a difference maker for our team.? Sklaruk finished.

Wood is expected to join the team at some point in the coming days and his status for Sunday?s game vs. Bonnyville is still unknown.

With Wood re-joining the Saints, a corresponding roster move was required.

The second move announced was that of Jonathan Assayag?s rights being traded to the Edmundston Blizzard of the Maritime Junior Hockey League for a player development fee and future considerations.

After being acquired by the Saints earlier this season from the Fort McMurray Oil Barons, the Montreal, QC native posted 6 goals and 5 assists in 19 games with Spruce Grove.

Sklaruk mentioned how finding a good spot for Assayag was important to the team.

?Johnny is a really great kid and a heck of a hockey player, I have a ton of respect and admiration for him. Edmundston is in 2nd place in their league and shooting for a championship. They?re really excited to get him; It?s going to be a great opportunity for him. I just can?t say enough good things about Johnny, our organization really hopes the best for him in Edmundston.? Sklaruk finished.

The Saints would like to welcome Brecon and his family back to the team and wish Jonathan and his family the very best in his future endeavours.

The Saints are now at the Hockey Canada mandated roster size of 23 skaters and no more roster moves will be announced.

Saints fans can catch all the new Saints on home ice for the first time Sunday, January 12th when the Bonnyville Pontiacs come to town for a 2 pm game followed by a post game public skate with the players.
