SAINTS LOCK UP LESYK FOR THE UPCOMING SEASON

(Spruce Grove, AB) – Spruce Grove Saints General Manager Rob Sklaruk announced today defenceman Matthew Lesyk has signed a Letter of Intent for the upcoming 2023-2024 season.

The Wetaskiwin, Alberta native plays with the Titans Hockey Union in the Junior Prospects Hockey League’s U18 Division.

The 5’10”, 181lbs defenceman has had a strong season, recording 19 points (5G, 14A) in 28 regular season games with the Titans, helping lead his club to a 27-4-1-1 record. To date in the 2022-23 playoffs, Lesyk has notched two goals and an assist in three games played, with his Titans club battling Lethbridge United in the semi-finals, looking to earn a berth in the League Championship next weekend in Edmonton, Alberta.

Last season, the 2007-born defenceman had a breakout season with the Hockey Super League’s Saints Pro Hockey Academy, surpassing the 20-goal plateau en route to a 40-point campaign (21G, 19A). His success led him to being selected by the Spokane Chiefs in the third round (58th overall) of the 2022 Western Hockey League Draft.

General Manager Rob Sklaruk says, “Matthew is a dynamic player who plays the game with incredible pace. He‘s an elite skater who can transport the puck in each zone. We are extremely excited to add a very talented hockey player and expect his adjustment to the Junior A level to be smooth.”

The Spruce Grove Saints have set a new franchise record for wins on home ice this season, collecting 58/60 points earning them a first round bye. The Saints will await the lowest remaining seed after round one and will start their quest for a sixth AJHL Championship on March 24th at the Grant Fuhr Arena.
