The Spruce Grove Saints will kick off their 2014-15 AJHL season at home on Saturday night (Sept. 6) with fanfare and a fan favourite.
The Saints will get the festivities underway with a tailgate party in the parking lot at the Grant Fuhr Arena and then follow that up with the unveiling of their three new championship banners — one each for being the top team in the regular season in the AJHL last year, one as the North Division champions and then the third, and ultimate prize in the league, the overall league championship flag.
To top all that off, a Saints alumnus, Ben Scrivens who is now a member of the Edmonton Oilers, will be on hand to take part in the ceremonial opening face-off.
As for Scrivens’ participation, it isn’t certain at this time how long he’ll be able to stick around after the face-off duties due to prior commitments but it’s hoped he can take some time to engage with local fans.
Helping with the face-off will be the team’s top goaltender from last year, Kenny Cameron, who will suit up with the NAIT Ooks this season, and Grove mayor, Stuart Houston.
The raising of the three title banners will see the Saints owners, Darren and Cheryl Myshak handling those duties. They will likely be joined by the team’s major sponsor Larry Thompson of Thompson Bros. Construction.
The Saints director of sales, marketing and media, Shaun Collard, said all the pre-game action gets underway between 5 and 5:30 p.m. on Saturday evening with lots to do outdoors before the game starts.
“It’ll be a good time,” said Collard, of what is hoped to be a free event. “It will be very similar to last year with food, beverages and our dunk tank.”
Season tickets for the Saints are still available and are a great deal for a season’s worth of excitement in the AJHL Game day tickets are available at the door of the Grant Fuhr Arena.
