The Saints and Thunder played their 4th and final game to end their cohort series at the Grant Fuhr Arena tonight. The Saints looked to find themselves back in the win column after a tough 4-1 loss yesterday in Drayton Valley.
The first period would remain scoreless as both teams could not solve either goalie. The Saints would come out of the gate with a higher energy and a faster pace, quickly leading in shots 4-0. Both teams would trade power plays in the period and there would also be a few scrums in front of both nets to set the tone. The Saints would lead in shots 13-5 after 20 minutes.
The second period was very much the same as the first, a couple power plays for each team, plenty of chances, and some rough stuff. The tie would eventually be broken as Dylan Price breaks through the crease to score with 8:49 left in the period. Brett Bamber would score just a few seconds later to elevate the lead to 2-0 for the Thunder. After a lengthy review the Saints would bring the game to within a goal as Vincent bats the puck to himself to score. Drayton Valley would then get their 2-goal lead back a few seconds later to make the score 3-1. The Saints would still lead in shots 19-16.
Both teams would keep the intensity high while also bringing the hits to another level in the 3rd period, giving us a few options to choose from for the hit of the game. The score would remain the same in the first ten minutes and the Thunder would catch up on shots. Drayton Valley would end up getting one goal on a power play late in the game for a final score of 4-1. Final shots in the game favoured the Saints 36-28.
The Spruce Grove Saints will have to wait for their next opponent as this series ends in a 2-2 tie. Stay tuned to Saints social media and website to find out what’s next.
