SAINTS BOLSTER ROSTER
(Spruce Grove, AB) Spruce Grove Saints General Manager Rob Sklaruk announced today the club has signed three players to its active roster. Joining the Saints are 2002 born defenseman Lucas Watkins (Okotoks, AB),? 2004 born defenseman Jed Magarrell (Coaldale, AB) and 2002 born goaltender Logan Breen (Red Deer, AB).
Watkins comes to the Saints from the Okotoks Oilers U18 AAA AMHL (Alberta Midget Hockey League) program. In 32 contests the 6?1?, 181 pound left shooting rear guard compiled two goals and 13 assists accompanied with 44 penalty minutes. Watkins has also suited up in five AJHL games in the previous two seasons with the Drumheller Dragons and the Okotoks Oilers.
Sklaruk sees a solid defenseman developing in Watkins. ?Lucas moves the puck very well and has a strong positional game. He works hard every day to make the jump from midget to our level and we are excited to add him to our group.?
Next to be signed was 16-year-old defenseman Jed Magarrell. The right shot defenseman listed at 6?0? and 150 pounds, spent the 2018-19 season at the Prairie Hockey Academy with the Elite 15 team program of the CSSHL (Canadian School Sport Hockey League), where he posted eight goals, 18 assists and 63 penalty minutes in 34 games played.
Sklaruk says, ?16 year old defenseman are rare in the AJHL so the signing of Magarrell speaks to his level of play. Jed exceeded expectations and continually proved he belonged here day in and day out. He has a high hockey IQ and understands what he needs to do to be successful here, which is rare for player his age.
The final signing out of training camp came in the crease with Logan Breen, a product of the Red Deer Optimist Chiefs, who are one of the top AMHL teams in the province year after year. The 6?0? and 181 pound stopper carried a 2.17 goals against average and .927 save percentage in 16 games last year, as well as one AJHL start under his belt with the Camrose Kodiaks.
Sklaruk praised the 18-year-old netminder, ?Logan had a great midget career and posted solid numbers there and we hope he can translate that experience and level of play at the Junior ?A? level. He?s been a welcome addition to our group.?
