In last night’s tight-checking game, where Alexander Babich (Chicago, IL) scored a pair, the Spruce Grove Saints defeated the Bonnyville Pontiacs in a 7-4 conclusion.
A minute into the first period, Jack Budd scored on the powerplay to give the Pontiacs an early lead. Soon after Budd’s goal, Carson Whyte (Regina, SK) got a powerplay goal to tie the game at one. Then, at 18:26, Brayden Vanderbilche scored to put the Pontiacs on top again. Less than twenty seconds later, Babich pulled off a backhand-forehand move to end the period with the game tied at two.
The second period contained many penalties but only one goal, courtesy of Ethan Kronewitt (Stony Plain, AB), who backhanded it in to give the Saints their first lead of the night!
Four minutes into the third period, Ewan McPherson (Edmonton, AB) sent one home to put the Saints up 4-2! Soon after McPherson’s goal, Isaac Abbott (Halifax, NS) sniped one on net to give the Saints a three-goal lead. Then, just under the halfway mark, Jack Budd scored his second of the night to cut the lead in half. A few minutes after Budd’s goal, Joshua Simpson scored to bring the Pontiacs within one. Twenty-six seconds later, Breck McKinley (St.Albert, AB) netted one home to give the Saints some breathing room. Then, with less than two minutes left in the game, Babich scores the empty-netter to get his second of the evening and seal the deal!
The Saints marched on to defeat the Pontiacs in a 7-4 finale!
